Spice and Wolf

From Spice and Wolf Wiki

Spice and Wolf (狼と香辛料, Ōkami to Kōshinryō) is a Japanese light novel series written by Isuna Hasekura and illustrated by Juu Ayakura. The series has also been adapted into a Manga series, two anime series—one adapted in 2008 and one in 2024, and multiple games.

The pivotal characters of the series are Kraft Lawrence, a Traveling Merchant, and Holo, a wolf incarnate worshiped as the small village Pasloe's harvest goddess.

The title of the series is derived from Gold and Spices[1], a book regarding medieval merchants and economics Isuna Hasekura read, which can be alternatively translated as Spice and Gold. Lawrence choosing spice as a means of payment following the Medio Trading Company Scheme[2] was likely envisioned by Hasekura to connect the plot to the title of the series.

On some occasions, especially in early media adaptations[3] and Merchandise[4], the title is translated as Merchant meats spicy wolf. This seeming mistranslation has been vaguely addressed by Hasekura [5] and does not appear in media or merchandise for the 2024 adaptation.
